What To Look For When Buying An Inner Spring Mattress

Innerspring mattresses, also known as spring mattresses are available in various types and prices. When you go to a mattress store, you need to be clear about the idea of spring mattresses, their types, their price range, features and other specifications so that the store owners don’t exploit your lack of knowledge. The following guide will take you through some of the basic concepts involving spring mattresses.

Spring mattress – An overview

Mattresses that are built of various kinds of coils internally are known as spring mattresses. The meaning is quite simple. However, the quality and price of the mattresses differ based on the material, quantity and quality of coils that are used inside. Mattresses that use very few coils are considered to be thin and of low quality. Therefore, they are priced quite reasonably. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean that all mattresses stuffed with a lot of coils inside are of great quality. Coils need to be fixed together in the right balance for the mattresses to perform well. According to experts, Dr. Leona Hawks, Home Furnishings & Housing Specialist, a good quality full-size mattress should have at least 300 coils, whereas a queen and king size bed should have at least 400 and 480 coils respectively.  Mattresses that have less than 300 coils are considered to be of low quality.

Types of coils

Today, most of the coils that you find in the support layer of spring mattresses belong to one of these five types – Continuous, Karr, Knotted Bonnell, Knotted Offset and Marshall. Let us look at a brief overview of each of these types here:

Continuous – Here, there is only one strand of coil running continuously along the system. It is considered to be one of the most durable mattresses available in the market today.

Karr- Here, the coils are in the shape of an hourglass, and they are left open at the ends to accommodate increased pressure from users.

Knotted Bonnell – Here the coils are in the shape of an hourglass, but there are five turns with the ends being knotted, thereby giving more firmness to the mattress.

Knotted Offset – Similar to the above type except for the formation of the top and bottom sections of the wire. In this offset model, these tips are made to be placed in a parallel position to that of the top surface.

Marshall – Here coils are cylindrical in shape, and they are stitched in such a way that they don’t depend on each other for movement.

Tips on buying an inner-spring mattress

  1. Be aware of the price range

You should shop at least three stores and be aware of the price range for the different qualities of mattresses so that you don’t feel exploited. It would cost you a minimum of $300 for a normal range of bed that is of good quality. If you are looking for a premium range of mattresses, you should be ready to shell out about $700 at least as minimum costs.  Mattresses that cost lesser than this would be of low quality. If you get lured by these low costs, you have to deal with extra financial burden towards repairs and maintenance of this mattress many times during its life.

  1. Try out mattresses properly

One of the common mistakes that most of us commit while trying mattresses at stores is to try them incorrectly. We become conscious about using these mattresses, and we lie down in a way that our shoes don’t touch the fabric. However, that is not the right way to try mattresses to see if you like them or not. Lie down in the same position that you would while you are at home and check for the firmness and other features. This will give you a better idea if that mattress would suit you or not. Also, you should never try more than 3 to 5 mattresses at a time, because you tend to get confused about how each one feels when you try too many.

  1. Negotiation

Once you are done selecting your mattress, never agree to the price which your dealer quotes you. Use your negotiation power, to the maximum extent possible  and visit at least three to five stores to have an idea about the offers and deals that are currently going on. This way, you will be able to save a great deal of money on your favorite mattresses.

  1. Checklist

Ensure that you prepare a detailed checklist when you go shopping for mattresses. Some of the questions that you should ask yourself to be sure that you are getting the right mattress are the following:

  • Type, quality and quantity of coils used in the mattress
  • Firmness, comfort, durability and ability of the mattress to handle pressure
  • Type of fabric cover and how easy is to wash and maintain
  • Terms and conditions of the manufacturer regarding warranty on the mattress
  • Repairs/ replacements and other issues during warranty period
  • Length and technical specifications of the mattress
  • Additional offers from the stores on warranty and services

These are just a few basic points that you need to think about while shopping for mattresses. These points help you to think broadly and take into consideration all the important factors before you invest your hard-earned money into a particular model.

  1. Check the labels

All manufacturers have to mention about the materials that they use for making the mattress in their labels. You need to check these labels thoroughly to ensure that you are not allergic to any of the materials mentioned there. If labels are missing or if you find incomplete or fake data on these labels, you should stay away from purchasing these mattresses. The store could be just trying to exploit you by selling you a mattress which was earlier returned by one of its customers.  Watching out for the labels helps you ascertain the authenticity of the mattress.
